This has been a flat out, nothing to any ones plans kind of week
We were told to take Rhys (15) to the hospital for his operation on Thursday at 7:15am
Rhys and I arrived as Lacey was at camp and Ross had to babysit
We gave Rhys the option of who he wanted to go with him and he said Mum so I went
We arrived and were first on the list
He was seen by the nurse and prep and she says which knee and he says left
The nurse then says great cause if it was your right then I would have to cancel as you have some scabs on there and cause we are working with bone we don't want infection
She takes a look at the left knee and what does she find ...more scabs... so much for the boy not playing sport lol
She says the surgeon will have to have a look but we will prep you and hope he doesn't cancel but I think he will
So we sit around waiting and at 8am the Dr comes in and has a look...nothing to worry about , surgery on
Next thing we see is the Dr running around with some nurses saying he will be back soon
1/2 hr later the Dr comes to me and says we have a prob... the instruments haven't been ordered...we are going to ring the reps but if they have some it will still be another 2 -3 hrs before they will be ready as they need to be sterilized...by this time is around 10am and Rhys hasn't eaten since 6pm the night beforeSo I have the Dr telling me this and Rhys is so nervous all he keeps doing is saying Mum what happens if I wake up thru it... I say he wont and he says I know but what if ....so much fun having a black and white only child
The head nurse comes in to apologize and says that we will have him done at 5:30pm
I tell them I want to take him home ...yep nothing to eat or drink
Ross takes him to the movies to try and take his mind off it
We arrive back at the hospital at 4pm and they start it all again...this time instead of day surgery they are telling me that they are finding him a bed....you should have seen his face
I told them I want to be able to stay the night...this would mean convincing the head of paediatrics ward that although Rhys is 15 by one week he is a young 15 and wont cause trouble
They let him stay there and I can also stay...
man this is getting long eh sorry
He goes to theater at 5pm where I am introduced to 'Simone who tells good jokes' I have been told I can go in till he goes to sleep
I try to calm Rhys down by saying Far out you have a boy nurse they are much more gentle as he had to have a cannula put in and was beyond scared
Simon replies 'boy nurse, boy nurse?'
Well they are good I say hoping to work out what i said wrong
'I am no boy nurse' he replies 'I am the anesthetist'.....Can you say Oooops...one thing I learnt quick in nursing is you don't mistake a Dr for a nurse
Well in my defence who introduces a Dr to a kid by his first name (and we wonder why our youth have no respect different post)
So this now means I have put the Dr in the wrong mood and he decides that I can't be there till Rhys is knocked out
Ok so I have been kicked out..Am waiting outside and it is now 6.10 and I see the surgeon walk in (not in scrubs) so I knew he wouldn't be operated on for another 20 mins
Well fast track to 8:15 when I hear he is off the table in recovery but they aren't going to let me in recovery, so now it seems that I broke my promise to him
Well after some sweet smiles at the head nurse who was there in the morning she let me in and I could see him
Then we are told we have to stay the night ..... ok I will deal with that.... Lacey is home from camp so she stays with the kids and Ross comes in ....when Rhys is sort of awake I ask who he wants to stay the night Daddy or Mummy
He once again choices me.... I don't mind as I am no longer feeding Brighton
We get organized and the nurse tells me the chair turns into a bed
Cool...
TILL I READ THE PAMPHLET SHE HANDS ME
The chair turns into a bed and holds weight up to 120kg
OOoopps ...this is bad very bad.....I now have to tell my son that Mummy can't stay Daddy will
All of you who have kids and are overweight can imagine how that ripped my heart out
Then he asks 'WHY Mum they said the chair turns into a bed"
Goodness in all his grogginess that is what he remembers
I end up telling him that cause he is a young man and might need to use the toilet or bottle it might be better if Daddy stays ...he says ok...come in real early... and goes back to sleep
And that was Thursday night...He came home in the arvo of Friday and has been on the lounge since...He has been sleeping in my bed as he can get comfy and that means We are on the lounge
Next to no sleep for me for the last 4 nights
But it is over and done with
If this post wasn't so long I would tell you about Rhys and the gofer Nurse real funny
what have I learnt from all this
I am becoming more patient... I didn't get upset at all
I am not going to let another one of my kids not have me stay with them cause of my weight
IT IS TIME
